Celebrating with Candles

Candles are more than just for setting a romantic mood or lighting up your room when the power goes out. They signify something far more important and are used in symbolizing different cultures from all over the world. There are the diyas of Diwali in India, the Hanukkah menorahs, and the bright altars during Mexico's Day of the Dead. Candles bring out the heart of celebrations, respect, and togetherness.

Let's dive into Diwali first, India's Festival of Lights. It's this time when candles and oil lamps, called 'diyas,' lights up houses not only in India but are also celebrated in several other countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. And, they're not lighting candles because they just want to, it's a way to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, hoping she'll bring prosperity and happiness.

Next up, Hanukkah, It's an eight-night Jewish festival centered around light. Each night, another candle is lit on a special candleholder called a menorah. One of the menorah's branches is usually placed higher or lower than the others. The candle in this branch is used to light the other eight candles, one by one, throughout the festival. By the final night, all eight candles are lit. And, guess what modern Hebrew call Hanukkah? Festival of lights. Yeah, similar to how our Indian friends call their Diwali.

Then, there's the Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, in Mexico, where candles help guide the spirits back home. Families set up altars with candles, pictures, and gifts to remember and honor their loved ones. If you have seen Disney's Coco, you get the idea.

In Australia, while there may not be a unique candle tradition indigenous to the continent in the same way Diwali or Hanukkah are tied to their origins, candles still hold a significant place in some occasions. Originating in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has become a global environmental movement where people turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change. During this hour, many Australians light candles as a sustainable source of light, making a symbolic and literal statement about environmental conservation.
